# Is there a link between PMS and sleep quality in young women?

Yes, students with worse PMS symptoms tended to have worse sleep quality, and PMS-related sleep changes were the strongest predictor of poor sleep.

 Early or limited evidence

313 nursing and medical students

## What they did

313 nursing and medical students filled in two questionnaires in a one-time survey: the Premenstrual Syndrome Scale and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index.

## What they found

Sleep quality scores were positively correlated with PMS scores overall and with its subscales. Sleep changes were the strongest predictor of poor sleep quality, followed by depressive thoughts (p < .01), then depressive mood, bloating, and total PMS score (p < .05).

## What it means for you

Students with more PMS symptoms, especially sleep changes and depressive thoughts, tend to sleep worse. This was a one-time survey in students, so it cannot prove PMS causes poor sleep, and the authors call for studies that actually test ways to improve sleep in PMS.
