# Does a birth control pill improve quality of life in women with moderate to severe PMS?

Yes, this pill significantly improved quality of life in multiple areas after 3 months, with 88.4% of women reporting satisfaction with treatment. However, this was a small study with no comparison to other treatments.

 Early or limited evidence

27 women with moderate to severe PMS, compared with 18 women without PMS

## What they did

Non-randomized prospective study. Researchers screened 360 women, selected 27 with moderate or severe PMS and 18 without PMS as a control. All participants had their quality of life and anxiety measured before and 3 months after treatment.

## What they found

After 3 months of the pill, quality of life improved significantly: physical pain (56.0 to 76.2), emotional role limitation (57.8 to 77.9), social activity (42.5 to 72.5), and mental health (62.0 to 72.0). A total of 88.4% of women expressed high satisfaction with treatment results.

## What it means for you

This pill may help women with moderate to severe PMS feel less pain, have fewer emotional limitations, engage more socially, and feel better mentally. However, it was a small study without comparison to other birth control methods, so we cannot be sure this pill is better than alternatives.
