# Could a genetic variation be linked to PMS risk?

A genetic variation in the estrogen receptor gene was more common in women with severe PMS and water-retention type PMS than in women without PMS, but no clear overall pattern was found across all PMS cases.

 Early or limited evidence

50 women with PMS and 25 women without PMS

## What they did

Researchers analyzed DNA from 50 women with different forms of PMS and 25 women without PMS to look for a specific genetic variation in the estrogen receptor gene called A-351G.

## What they found

The GG genetic variant was 8.0 times more common in women with severe PMS and 7.0 times more common in women with water-retention type PMS compared to women without PMS. However, when looking at all PMS cases together, there was no clear overall difference in the genetic variation between women with and without PMS.

## What it means for you

This genetic variant might be linked to developing severe or water-retention PMS, but because only one genetic variation was examined in a relatively small group, more research is needed to understand the full genetic picture of PMS.
