Study, 2015

# What self-care measures do female nursing students use for PMS?

Most nursing students have PMS symptoms. 87.1% experienced premenstrual symptoms, but very few used recommended dietary changes like reducing fat, salt, spices, or caffeine.

 Early or limited evidence

210 female nursing students

## What they did

Used questionnaires to ask 210 female nursing students about their PMS symptoms and self-care measures, including separate assessment sheets for demographics, measurements, menstrual history, symptom severity, and self-care practices.

## What they found

87.1% of the 210 students experienced premenstrual symptoms. For dietary self-care, 16.2% decreased fat intake, 14% decreased spices, 6% decreased salt, and 4.2% decreased caffeine. 12.4% had severe mood swings and 9.5% had severe fatigue.

## What it means for you

Most nursing students have PMS, but very few use dietary self-care measures. This study looked only at nursing students in one place, so we don't know if the same pattern applies to all women.

87.1%

Experienced premenstrual symptoms

16.2%

12.4%
