Survey study, 2025

# Do younger and middle-aged women experience different premenstrual symptoms and quality of life?

Younger and middle-aged women experience significantly different symptom severity and quality of life impacts. This is low-strength evidence from a small community study in India.

 Early or limited evidence

130 women in Kerala, India (65 young, 65 middle-aged)

## What they did

Researchers compared 65 young and 65 middle-aged women in Kerala, assessing their premenstrual symptoms and quality of life using two standard questionnaires.

## What they found

Symptom severity differed significantly between age groups (p<0.05). Quality of life scores in physical, psychological, and social domains differed significantly (p<0.05). A weak negative correlation was found between symptom severity and social domain quality of life (p<0.05). Menstrual cycle regularity was associated with symptom severity in both groups (p<0.05).

## What it means for you

Age affects symptom severity and quality-of-life impact. The study is small, conducted in one Indian community, and cross-sectional, so findings may not apply to other regions or populations.
