# How common is premenstrual syndrome in teenage and young adult girls?

About 28 percent of girls aged 13 to 22 had some premenstrual syndrome symptoms, and about 7 percent had severe symptoms. Fatigue and backache were the most common.

 Moderate study design

275 girls aged 13 to 22 in India

## What they did

Researchers surveyed 275 girls aged 13 to 22 at schools and colleges in Kadapa, India. They asked about premenstrual symptoms and whether family members had PMS.

## What they found

Of the 275 girls, 76 (27.6%) reported premenstrual syndrome, and 5 (6.7%) reported severe syndrome. The most common symptom was fatigue (162 girls, 58.9%), followed by backache (165 girls, 60%). Girls aged 19 to 22 had the highest prevalence at 30.3 percent. Among girls with premenstrual syndrome, 61 (41.2%) had family members with PMS.

## What it means for you

Premenstrual syndrome is fairly common in girls and young women, with about one in four experiencing symptoms. Having family members with PMS raises a girl's risk. This study was done in India, so results may not apply everywhere.
