# Do women with PMS have worse sleep quality than those without?

Yes. A significantly higher percentage of women with PMS reported poor sleep quality, mainly due to sleep disturbances. The difference was statistically significant.

Medical Academy students with and without PMS

## What they did

A case-control study of Medical Academy students. Researchers identified women with PMS using a standardized scale and assessed sleep quality using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), a validated questionnaire that measures how well people sleep.

## What they found

Poor sleep quality was found in 75.6% of women with PMS and 58.8% of women without PMS, a statistically significant difference. The strongest difference between groups was in the sleep disturbance component specifically, with a score of 1.7 (±0.6) in women with PMS versus 1.5 (±0.6) in women without PMS.

## What it means for you

Women with PMS are much more likely to experience poor sleep quality and sleep disturbances, particularly difficulty sleeping through the night. Sleep problems may be part of how PMS affects overall wellbeing. This study was small and included only medical students, so results may not apply to all women.
