# Does being overweight or not getting enough calcium affect PMS?

Being overweight is linked to more severe PMS. Getting enough calcium does not appear to affect PMS severity.

 Moderate study design

83 female university students at Universitas Airlangga, Indonesia

## What they did

Cross-sectional study of 83 female university students. Researchers measured their weight and height, asked what they ate using 2-day food recalls, and gave them a questionnaire about PMS symptoms.

## What they found

There was a connection between nutritional status and PMS severity (p = 0.012). Overweight women were more likely to have severe PMS. There was no connection between calcium intake and PMS (p = 0.878).

## What it means for you

Weight may matter for PMS symptoms, but calcium intake did not show a clear effect in this study. This was a small study from one university in Indonesia, measuring calcium over only 2 days, which may not reflect usual eating habits.
