# Do girls with PMS have different estrogen levels than those without?

Girls with PMS had higher estrogen levels than those without. Girls with severe PMS had the highest levels. This is a one-time measurement, so we cannot tell if high estrogen causes PMS.

 Early or limited evidence

50 teenage girls (25 with PMS, 25 without) at Pesantren Darul Arqam, Makassar

## What they did

Researchers compared 25 teenage girls with PMS to 25 without PMS. Girls with PMS kept daily symptom diaries and provided blood samples. Estrogen was measured using a lab test called ELISA. The study lasted 3 months.

## What they found

The mean estrogen level in girls with PMS was 148.32 pg/ml, compared to 98.00 pg/ml in girls without PMS. Girls with mild PMS had 130.73 pg/ml and those with severe PMS had 162.14 pg/ml. The difference was significant.

## What it means for you

Higher estrogen is linked to PMS in teenage girls, and severe PMS is linked to even higher estrogen. The study measured estrogen only once, so we don't know if this changes through the cycle or if high estrogen actually causes PMS.
