Study, 2022

# How do depression and parent communication affect premenstrual syndrome in high school girls?

Depression was linked to more PMS symptoms. Open and supportive communication with parents was linked to fewer symptoms. Together with menstrual pain and grade level, these factors explained about 34.4% of the variation in PMS symptoms.

312 high school girls in one city

## What they did

Researchers surveyed 312 high school girls in one city. They measured depression, communication with parents (open and supportive or problem-focused), and premenstrual syndrome symptoms. They used statistical analysis to find which factors were most related to PMS.

## What they found

Depression was linked to more PMS symptoms. Open and supportive communication with mothers and fathers was linked to fewer symptoms. Problem-focused communication with both parents was also linked to fewer symptoms. Menstrual pain and grade level also affected PMS. Depression was the strongest factor.

## What it means for you

Both mood and family communication are related to how much PMS a girl experiences. This suggests that managing depression and improving family communication might help reduce PMS in high school girls. The main limitation is that this was a cross-sectional study showing relationships, not proving that one causes the other.
