Survey study, 2018

# Does premenstrual syndrome increase stress in nursing students?

Yes. Women nursing students with PMS had significantly higher stress levels than those without PMS.

 Early or limited evidence

60 nursing students in South Korea

## What they did

Cross-sectional survey of 60 nursing students at a university from April to July 2018. Students filled out questionnaires about PMS symptoms (47 questions) and daily life stress (50 questions) using a 5-point scale.

## What they found

Students with PMS had significantly higher stress scores than students without PMS. The study found that PMS affects physical activity, emotions, and behavior in ways that increase stress in nursing students.

## What it means for you

PMS may increase life stress for nursing students. However, the study only included students at one university in one discipline, so findings may not apply to other groups of women. As a cross-sectional study, we cannot tell if PMS causes stress or stress makes PMS worse.
