# Does climate change anxiety affect premenstrual syndrome?

Women with PMS had higher climate change anxiety scores. Women who felt affected by climate change were 2.1 times more likely to have PMS, though the study design doesn't show whether anxiety causes PMS or vice versa.

 Early or limited evidence

456 women of reproductive age

## What they did

Online survey of 456 women of reproductive age between December 2023 and February 2024. They measured PMS with a PMS Scale and anxiety about climate change with an Eco-Anxiety Scale.

## What they found

44.7% of women had PMS. Women with PMS had significantly higher climate anxiety scores. Women who felt affected by climate change had 2.1 times the odds of having PMS (p = 0.035).

## What it means for you

Worrying about climate change may be linked to PMS, but this is a snapshot study from one time period, so we don't know if anxiety causes PMS or vice versa. The study was online-only, which may not represent all women.
