# Did COVID-19 increase PMS symptoms in female doctors?

Yes. Female doctors showed more PMS and PMDD symptoms during the pandemic, linked to psychological stress. Front-line workers had worse symptoms.

 Early or limited evidence

Female doctors aged 15-49 at 2 hospitals in Qalyoubia governorate, Egypt

## What they did

Cross-sectional study at 2 hospitals in Egypt from January to March 2022. Researchers assessed PMS symptoms and psychological stress in female doctors aged 15-49.

## What they found

PMS and PMDD symptoms increased during the pandemic and were linked to psychological stress from COVID-19. Front-line workers had more symptoms than non-front-line workers. Menstrual pain intensity was significantly related to trauma stress scores.

## What it means for you

Psychological stress from COVID-19 may worsen PMS symptoms. Limited to female doctors in one region of Egypt during early 2022, so findings may not apply to other women or time periods.
