# What antidepressant should doctors use to treat depression and premenstrual dysphoric disorder?

According to expert consensus, a single antidepressant, usually an SSRI or SNRI, is recommended as first-line treatment for most types of depression, including premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

 Moderate study design

Guideline for treating depression in various populations, including those with PMDD

## What they did

Korean experts completed a 44-item questionnaire to update treatment guidelines for major depression, incorporating expert consensus and new research published between 2006 and 2012. Recommendations covered different types of depression and special populations including PMDD.

## What they found

Antidepressant monotherapy was recommended as first-line treatment for non-psychotic depression in adults, children, adolescents, elderly patients, and those with postpartum depression or premenstrual dysphoric disorder. For psychotic depression, combining an antidepressant with an antipsychotic was recommended.

## What it means for you

This is a consensus guideline based on expert opinion and published research through 2012, not a new research study. It shows that PMDD is treated similarly to other forms of depression, with SSRIs or SNRIs as standard medications. This guideline may have been updated since 2012.
