# Does diet affect premenstrual syndrome symptoms?

The study found that breakfast and lunch intake were related to PMS, and women with PMS ate more total energy daily but less protein. We cannot be sure diet causes PMS from this study alone.

 Early or limited evidence

219 nursing students

## What they did

Cross-sectional study of 219 nursing students. Researchers collected food diaries and gave students a PMS symptom scale to assess nutrient intake and PMS presence.

## What they found

53.4% of students had PMS. Students with PMS had higher daily energy intake and a lower percentage of energy from protein, and these differences were statistically significant. Breakfast and lunch consumption affected PMS presence, but coffee, salt, and skipping meals did not.

## What it means for you

Diet patterns may relate to PMS symptoms, but this was only an observation study. We cannot prove diet causes PMS. The study was small and only looked at nursing students.
