# Does lisuride maleate, a dopamine medication, reduce PMS symptoms?

Symptoms improved significantly, with headaches dropping from 85.7% to 20% and other symptoms also improving. However, this was a small study with no control group, so we cannot be sure how much improvement came from the drug versus placebo.

 Early or limited evidence

35 women aged 19-35 with PMS diagnosis

## What they did

35 women aged 19-35 with PMS and no other gynecological disorders were treated with lisuride maleate 0.3 mg daily (split into 3 doses) for 3 months. Researchers measured symptom severity and hormone levels before and after treatment.

## What they found

All measured symptoms improved significantly: headaches from 85.7% to 20%, breast pain from 91.4% to 25%, bloating from 74.2% to 40%, lower leg swelling from 85.7% to 30%, and leg pain from 61% to 34%. Hormone levels showed small changes in FSH, progesterone, and prolactin.

## What it means for you

Lisuride maleate produced large symptom reductions. However, without a control group we cannot know if improvements came from the drug or from placebo or time alone. Adverse events were reported by 20 patients, and 1 withdrew early due to fatigue and headache. Hormone levels were only measured at one time point, so it is unclear how hormones actually changed.
