Survey study, 2025

How common are PMS and PMDD among female university students?

About 10.37% had PMS and 19.26% had PMDD. Technical course students had higher rates than medical course students.

Early or limited evidence 270 female university students aged 18-25 at an Indian pharmacy college with normal menstrual cycles

What they did

Enrolled 270 female university students aged 18-25 with normal menstrual cycles. Used the Premenstrual Symptoms Screening Tool to assess PMS and PMDD. Then provided an educational intervention about symptoms and measured how much knowledge improved.

What they found

10.37% had PMS and 19.26% had PMDD overall. Technical course students had higher rates (12.69% PMS, 26.98% PMDD) compared to medical students (8.33% PMS, 12.5% PMDD). After the educational intervention, knowledge about emotional symptoms improved significantly, with a Cohen's d of 1.682 (p < 0.001).
