Survey study, 1989
Do women with different types of PMS differ in age, education, or marital status?
No significant differences were found in age, education, marital status, or employment between women in three PMS groups. The only difference was that women with pure PMS had lower neuroticism scores and less psychiatric history.
What they did
80 women seeking help for PMS at a clinic in Sweden completed daily symptom ratings and personality questionnaires. Researchers divided them into three groups based on their symptom cycling patterns.
What they found
No significant differences between the three groups in marital status, education, employment, or menstrual problems. The pure PMS group had significantly fewer patients with pathologically high neuroticism scores and fewer with a psychiatric history.
What it means for you
Women seeking PMS help don't differ much by age or life circumstances, but those with pure PMS appear to have different personality traits. This was a small study in one Swedish clinic, so findings may not apply more widely.
