Interview study, 2020

How does PMS affect women's daily lives and what helps them cope?

PMS causes physical symptoms, emotional problems, and family difficulties. Women cope by trying different activities and changing their environment.

Early or limited evidence 14 college faculty and graduate students aged 20-45, mostly 25-30

What they did

Qualitative study with 14 college faculty and students aged 20-45. Researchers held focus group interviews lasting up to 45 minutes and asked women about their PMS experiences and how they cope.

What they found

Five main themes emerged: physical consequences, psychological problems, family and social consequences, distraction through activities, and environmental modifications. Most participants (12, or 70.58%) were aged 25-30.

What it means for you

PMS affects many parts of women's lives beyond just physical symptoms. Women find ways to cope that work for them, like distraction and environmental changes. This was a small qualitative study with 14 women, so findings may not represent all women's experiences.
