What measurement tools exist for menstrual problems?
Researchers reviewed studies about tools used to measure menstrual symptoms and found scales for menstrual pain and PMS, but none specifically designed for abnormal menstruation.
What they did
Searched two databases for research papers about measurement tools for menstrual symptoms. They reviewed 18 papers total: 12 from Japan and 6 from other countries.
What they found
Existing tools measure menstrual symptoms, pain, behavior during menstruation, PMS diagnosis, PMDD, and menstrual self-care. However, no tool was found specifically designed to measure abnormal menstruation.
What it means for you
Doctors need better tools to help women with irregular periods recognize when to see a doctor. This is a review of what measurement tools currently exist, not a study testing how well any tool works.
