Does progressive muscle relaxation reduce PMS in adolescent girls?

Yes, significantly. Progressive muscle relaxation exercises reduced premenstrual syndrome symptoms according to statistical analysis.

Moderate study design 100 adolescent girls with moderate to severe PMS at a school in Silvassa

What they did

Quasi-experimental study with control group. 100 adolescent girls with moderate to severe PMS at a school in Silvassa received Jacobson Progressive Muscle Relaxation Exercise for 15-20 minutes once daily for 28 days. PMS was measured using modified Stainer and Wilkins criteria.

What they found

Paired t-test analysis found significant improvement in PMS symptoms, though specific numbers are not provided in the abstract.

What it means for you

Progressive muscle relaxation appeared to help reduce PMS in adolescents. Main limitation: the abstract does not provide the actual improvement figures, making it hard to judge how much symptoms improved. This was a school-based study, so results may not apply to other age groups.
