Survey study, 2020

How common is premenstrual syndrome in young females?

The study does not report the exact prevalence percentage. It confirms that PMS symptoms are common in young women and often limit their daily activities.

Early or limited evidence 150 young females at Bhaskar medical college in India

What they did

Researchers surveyed 150 young females at a medical college in India from June to July 2018. Participants completed a 29-item questionnaire about premenstrual symptoms. Data from 100 participants were analyzed.

What they found

The study analyzed symptoms as either less than 50% or above 50% intensity, but the actual prevalence percentage is not stated in the abstract. The most common psychological symptom was irritability rather than depression.

What it means for you

While the study confirms PMS is common in young women, the abstract does not provide the main finding (prevalence percentage). The study was limited to two months at one hospital.
