Survey study, 2024

Does a psychosomatic relaxation package help adolescent girls with PMS?

Yes, the relaxation package significantly increased knowledge (p=0.001), reduced symptom experience (p=0.001), and improved lifestyle practices (p=0.001) compared to routine care. Certainty is moderate.

Moderate study design 60 adolescent girls with PMS in Tirunelveli District, India

What they did

Experimental study with 60 adolescent girls with PMS divided into two groups. Experimental group (30) received a psychosomatic relaxation package. Control group (30) received routine care. Knowledge, symptoms, and lifestyle practices were measured before and after.

What they found

Experimental group showed significant increases in knowledge (p=0.001), significant reduction in symptom experience (p=0.001), and significant improvements in lifestyle practices (p=0.001) compared to control. In the experimental group, correlations were: knowledge versus symptoms (r=0.34), symptoms versus lifestyle (r=0.38), knowledge versus lifestyle (r=0.37), all significant at p=0.01.

What it means for you

A relaxation-based intervention appears effective for PMS in adolescents, improving understanding and reducing symptoms. It may be worth trying. Limitation: small sample (60 participants) in one district in India, so results may not generalize widely.
