Does abdominal stretching reduce PMS symptoms in teenagers?
Ten teenagers with PMS who received abdominal stretching showed improvement in their symptoms across two menstrual cycles, with severity decreasing from severe to mild. However, this was a small group with no control group.
What they did
Ten teenagers at a boarding school who had PMS were given abdominal stretching treatment. Their PMS symptoms were measured across two menstrual cycles.
What they found
PMS symptoms decreased from a severe level (70%) to a medium level (60%) after the first menstrual cycle, and to a mild level (60%) after the second cycle.
What it means for you
This small study suggests abdominal stretching might help PMS symptoms. However, because there was no control group, only ten people were studied, and it was a case series rather than a controlled trial, we cannot be sure the stretching caused the improvement or how well it would work for other women and ages.
