80 women with uterine fibroids took ulipristal acetate and reported on their bleeding, period pain, side effects, and PMS changes on a questionnaire.
What they found
67 women (84%) showed improvement in bleeding. 54 women (67%) stopped menstruating. 58 women (70%) reported reduced pain. 80% reported improvement in PMS symptoms. Most women had no or infrequent side effects.
What it means for you
This progesterone-based medication helps fibroids and may also help PMS, but this is observational data without a comparison group. More controlled research is needed to be sure.
