Survey study, 2025

Does PMDD affect screen time, sleep quality, and how fast people react?

Yes. Women with PMDD spent more time on phones, had worse sleep, and were slower to respond to sounds and images compared to healthy women.

Moderate study design 150 women aged 18-24 with PMDD and 150 healthy control women in India

What they did

Researchers screened 1200 young women and recruited 150 with PMDD (diagnosed by DSM-5 criteria) and 150 healthy controls. They measured screen time using an app, sleep quality with a questionnaire, and reaction time with audio and visual tests.

What they found

Women with PMDD had significantly higher screen time and significantly higher insomnia scores. Both auditory and visual reaction times were significantly longer in the PMDD group compared to healthy controls.

What it means for you

Heavy phone use is linked to PMDD and may make sleep worse. Slower reaction times in PMDD could affect everyday tasks. The main limitation is that the study shows association but not whether screen time causes PMDD or PMDD leads to more screen use.
