Survey study, 2019

How common is PMS in young women and what coping methods do they use?

PMS was very common: 96% of 84 paramedical students reported it. The most common symptoms were acne (56%) and anger/irritability (60%). Most used simple remedies like drinking hot or cold beverages (46%), which may not be effective.

Early or limited evidence 84 female paramedical students ages 18-25

What they did

Cross-sectional survey of 89 female paramedical students ages 18-25 (84 completed the study). A structured questionnaire assessed PMS prevalence, knowledge, and awareness of coping techniques.

What they found

81 of 84 participants (96%) reported having PMS. Most common physical symptom was acne (56%). Most common psychological symptom was anger or irritability (60%). About 57% reported that PMS affected their studies. The most common coping technique was drinking hot or cold beverages (46%). The study noted high use of unhelpful coping techniques.

What it means for you

PMS is extremely common in young women and significantly affects their academic work. However, many are using coping methods that are unlikely to be effective. The study only includes paramedical students in one location, so results may not reflect all young women. Evidence-based coping strategies and awareness programs are needed.
