Does homeopathic medicine help premenstrual syndrome?

In this study of 40 women, homeopathic treatment significantly reduced symptom severity. Because there was no control group, we cannot be sure the improvement came from the medicine rather than from attention, time, or expectation.

Early or limited evidence 40 women aged 18-40 with premenstrual syndrome in India

What they did

Non-randomized prospective case series at a homoeopathic medical institution from March 2024 to January 2025. Enrolled 40 women aged 18-40 with PMS. Gave each individualized homoeopathic medicines in centesimal potencies and assessed them using the Menstrual Distress Questionnaire before and after a minimum 6-month follow-up.

What they found

Significant reduction in mean Menstrual Distress Questionnaire score with mean reduction of 8.8 points. Statistical analysis used Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test. The abstract does not provide the complete p-value.

What it means for you

Homeopathic medicines appeared to reduce PMS symptoms in this study. This is a weak design because there was no comparison group and no blinding, so improvement could come from factors other than the medicine, such as attention from the doctor or natural improvement over time.
