Does eating papaya help premenstrual tension syndrome?
We cannot tell if papaya helps because the abstract does not report the actual results. The study was small and not properly randomized.
What they did
Quasi-experimental design with 60 adolescent girls, 30 in the experimental group and 30 in the control group. Girls in the experimental group received 75 mg of papaya fruit daily starting from the 5th day of the last menstrual period for 21 days. The pretest and posttest level of premenstrual tension syndrome was measured using a modified scale.
What they found
The abstract does not report the results. It states that data analysis was performed but does not include the findings.
What it means for you
The study aimed to test if papaya might help premenstrual tension syndrome through calcium, vitamins, and minerals. Because results are not reported in the abstract, we cannot know if it worked. Main limits: quasi-experimental design, small sample, and missing results.
