Are PMDD, anxiety, and internet use linked to cognitive problems in women?

In this study of women aged 19-45 with anxiety, those who also had PMDD, severe anxiety lasting 5 or more years, or problematic internet use showed associations with cognitive problems including memory and concentration difficulties.

Early or limited evidence 86 women aged 19-45 with anxiety symptoms in Indonesia

What they did

Eighty-six women aged 19-45 with anxiety symptoms completed questionnaires to measure anxiety severity and duration, PMDD symptoms, problematic internet use, and cognitive function. Researchers looked for associations between these factors and cognitive problems.

What they found

Of the 86 women, 64 had cognitive problems. Among all participants, 53 had severe anxiety, 46 had anxiety lasting 5 or more years, 34 screened positive for PMDD, and 67 had problematic internet use. Women with PMDD, severe anxiety, long-lasting anxiety, or problematic internet use all showed associations with cognitive problems.

What it means for you

Among women with anxiety, those with PMDD or problematic internet use appear to have higher rates of memory and concentration problems. This suggests managing anxiety, PMDD symptoms, and internet use habits might help with cognitive function. Main limits: only women with anxiety (not a general population), study in Indonesia, and shows association, not cause.
