Survey study, 2018

Does PMS affect quality of life, and is it related to body weight?

Yes, PMS significantly reduced both physical and mental quality of life. However, there was no connection between PMS and body weight.

Moderate study design 207 women aged 18-25, of which 57 had PMS

What they did

Cross-sectional study screening 207 women aged 18-25 for PMS using Moos menstrual distress questionnaire. 57 women were diagnosed with PMS. Researchers measured body mass index and quality of life using SF-36 questionnaire.

What they found

PMS significantly correlated with lower physical quality of life (r = -0.4228, p = 0.0011) and lower mental quality of life (r = -0.4326, p = 0.0008). There was no significant correlation between PMS and body mass index.

What it means for you

PMS affects both physical and mental quality of life, but body weight does not appear related to whether women have PMS. Main limit is the cross-sectional design means we cannot prove cause and effect.
