Survey study, 2013

Do women with PMS have lower calcium levels in their blood?

Yes. Women with PMS had lower calcium levels (8.50 to 9.40 mg/dl) compared to women without PMS. A calcium cutoff of 9.40 mg/dl identified PMS with 90.9% accuracy.

Early or limited evidence 45 women aged 20-35 years old

What they did

Cross-sectional study of 45 women aged 20-35 years old. Researchers asked participants to fill questionnaires about PMS and took a blood sample to measure calcium levels.

What they found

Women with PMS had calcium levels between 8.50 to 9.40 mg/dl. A calcium cutoff of 9.40 mg/dl had 90.9% sensitivity, 75% specificity, and 86.7% overall accuracy for identifying PMS. Calcium levels were significantly associated with PMS incidence.

What it means for you

Lower blood calcium may be linked to PMS. A simple blood test might help identify who has PMS. The study is very small and cross-sectional, so it does not prove that low calcium causes PMS. More research is needed.
