Can learning to notice sensory changes help women with PMDD manage their symptoms?

In one hospitalized woman with PMDD, occupational therapy that taught her to notice sensory changes helped her feel more in control and do more daily activities.

Early or limited evidence Woman hospitalized for PMDD

What they did

Doctors described one woman who was hospitalized for worsening PMDD and received occupational therapy aimed at helping her notice and manage how her senses responded to her surroundings.

What they found

After receiving the therapy, the woman reported increased awareness of her difficulties and improved ability to manage and participate in daily activities.

What it means for you

Sensory awareness and self-management may help women with PMDD cope better. However, much more research is needed to understand whether this helps other women.
