Case report, 2013
Can contraceptive medications help people with both bipolar disorder and PMDD?
Three people with both conditions improved significantly. These are only three cases, so we need larger studies to be sure.
What they did
Doctors reported on three people with bipolar disorder who also had PMDD. They treated them with additional contraceptive medications alongside mood stabilizers.
What they found
All three responded well to the treatment. Their severe premenstrual symptoms improved significantly.
What it means for you
These are only three people's experiences. The cases suggest that adding contraceptive medications and mood stabilizers might help people with both conditions, but we need larger, controlled studies to be sure.
