Survey study, 2023

Do women with PMS and irritable bowel syndrome have related conditions?

IBS and PMS appear to share similar causes and may occur together in women. Better cooperation between doctors treating these conditions is needed.

Early or limited evidence Women of reproductive age (literature review)

What they did

Literature review examining the relationship between IBS and PMS in women of reproductive age. The authors reviewed clinical observations and research databases to explore links between functional gastrointestinal disorders and the menstrual cycle.

What they found

50 to 80% of women experience premenstrual symptoms, while 95% of women in Russia have PMS. IBS affects 15 to 20% of people, but two-thirds do not seek medical care. Many women with IBS have symptom worsening during the luteal phase. IBS and PMS share similar underlying causes and pathways.

What it means for you

If you have both PMS and IBS, your gastroenterologist and gynecologist should communicate about your treatment plan. More research is needed to understand how these conditions connect and whether treating one helps the other.
