Is Pilates exercise or Vitex agnus supplement more effective at reducing PMS symptoms?

Yes, both reduced PMS symptoms after 2 months (p<0.001), but Pilates was significantly more effective than Vitex agnus (p<0.001). The study lacked randomization and did not compare to standard PMS treatments.

Early or limited evidence 60 sedentary college-aged girls (18-25 years) with PMS at Isfahan University, Iran

What they did

Quasi-experimental study of 60 sedentary college-aged girls (18-25 years) with PMS at Isfahan University in Iran. Participants were assigned to three groups: Pilates exercise, Vitex agnus supplement, or control. Symptom severity was assessed at baseline and repeatedly over 4 months.

What they found

After 1 and 2 months, both Pilates and Vitex agnus groups showed decreased PMS and physical and psychological symptoms (p<0.001). Pilates resulted in greater reductions in physical, psychological, and total PMS symptoms compared to Vitex agnus and control groups (p<0.001).

What it means for you

Pilates exercise appears more effective than Vitex agnus for reducing PMS symptoms in this age group. However, the study lacked randomization and did not compare to standard PMS treatments. The control group was passive, so we cannot determine whether improvements were due to the active interventions or other factors.
