What causes cyclical breast pain, and is it related to fibrocystic disease?
Fibrocystic disease doesn't cause cyclical breast pain. The exact cause is unknown, but researchers believe it originates in the breast tissue itself rather than in hormone-producing organs.
What they did
Researchers examined breast tissue samples under a microscope from 39 women with cyclical breast pain and 68 women without breast pain.
What they found
Women with cyclical breast pain did not have more fibrocystic disease than women without pain. There was no link between cyclical breast pain and disorders of the internal reproductive organs. The source of the pain appears to be located in the breast tissue itself.
What it means for you
Cyclical breast pain is not fully understood yet. The study examined what was different in the tissue, but the exact mechanism causing the pain remains unclear.
