Lab study, 2023
Do isometric exercises reduce PMS symptoms?
Yes. Women who did isometric exercises for 2 weeks showed a clear reduction in both physical and psychological PMS symptoms.
What they did
Researchers enrolled 28 women with PMS symptoms and taught them isometric exercises (muscle contractions without movement). Participants performed these exercises for 2 weeks. Researchers measured PMS symptoms before and after the exercise period.
What they found
After 2 weeks of isometric exercises, there was a clear difference between symptoms measured before and after. Both psychological and physical symptoms showed improvement.
What it means for you
Isometric exercises appear to reduce PMS symptoms over 2 weeks. These exercises are inexpensive, quick to do, and don't need equipment. However, this is a small study with no control group, so we can't be certain the improvement wasn't natural variation or a placebo effect. We don't know how long benefits last or how often to repeat the exercises.
