Interview study, 2022

Does a mindfulness program help improve PMDD and quality of life?

A small pilot test of a six-module mindfulness program showed improvements in severe PMS (PMDD) symptoms and quality of life, but the study was too small to confirm it works widely.

Early or limited evidence Late adolescent students (8 tested the full program)

What they did

A mixed-methods study with three phases: first, surveys of late adolescent students to identify needs; second, experts reviewed the six-module mindfulness program and rated its quality; third, eight students tried the program and completed before-and-after quality-of-life assessments.

What they found

In need assessment surveys, 19% of students met criteria for PMDD and 43% experienced moderate to high PMS. In the pilot test of eight students, the mindfulness program led to significant reductions in PMDD symptoms and improvements in quality of life.

What it means for you

Mindfulness-based programs may help with PMDD, but this is very early evidence from a tiny pilot. The study had no control group and only eight participants, so larger comparisons with control groups are needed.
