Study, 2023
How common are PMS symptoms in nursing students in Turkey and how do they cope?
Most nursing students had significant symptoms before or during their period. About 82.5% had physical pain, 77% had emotional symptoms, and most used herbal or medical treatment.
What they did
Researchers surveyed 364 nursing students in Turkey from February to May 2023. Students answered questions about period symptoms and how they coped with them.
What they found
Most students had multiple symptoms. Physical pain in the belly, lower back, or back was reported by 82.5%. Emotional symptoms like tension, irritability, or sensitivity were reported by 77%. Other symptoms included appetite changes (75.2%), pain (65.7%), fatigue (65.6%), bloating (62.4%), and sleep problems (60.7%). For coping, 41.7% used herbal treatment and 31.5% used medical treatment.
What it means for you
Most nursing students in Turkey had significant period symptoms. Appetite changes and fatigue were very common. Most students dealt with symptoms using herbal or medical approaches. The main limit is that this included only nursing students in Turkey, so findings may not apply to other groups.
