Does mindfulness meditation reduce premenstrual symptoms in nursing students?

Mindfulness meditation significantly reduced premenstrual symptom severity in this study (p<0.001). The abstract does not specify how many students were studied or provide the actual reduction in symptoms, limiting what we can conclude.

Early or limited evidence Nursing students with premenstrual symptoms in Alappuzha, India

What they did

Quasi-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design. Nursing students with premenstrual symptoms were taught mindfulness meditation and mindfulness breathing by the investigator. The intervention ran from the 6th day of the menstrual cycle until the first day of the next cycle, with posttest on the first day of the next cycle.

What they found

Mindfulness meditation techniques had a significant effect in reducing premenstrual symptom severity score (p<0.001). Statistical analysis used paired t-test.

What it means for you

Mindfulness meditation appeared to reduce premenstrual symptoms in nursing students. This is a weak design because there was no control group and the abstract does not provide sample size or amount of improvement. We cannot tell if improvement came from the meditation or from other factors like time passing or increased attention to symptoms.
