Cohort study, 1997

Does counseling that reframes menstrual experiences help PMS?

Yes, counseling combining social support and positive reframing reduced PMS impairment and depression. However, this was a very small study without a control group, so results are preliminary.

Early or limited evidence 18 women with PMS followed across 4 menstrual cycles.

What they did

A health promotion program for 18 women with PMS across four menstrual cycles that provided social support and taught positive reframing of menstrual cycle experiences. Researchers measured impairment and mood before, during, and after the program.

What they found

Impairment and state depression both decreased significantly from baseline to follow-up. Personal resource variables also improved significantly. Perimenstrual activation did not increase significantly.

What it means for you

Psychological approaches that help women reframe their relationship with their menstrual cycle can reduce PMS burden and depression. However, this was a very small study with no comparison group, so findings need confirmation in larger studies.
