Does pranayama breathing practice reduce premenstrual syndrome?
Yes. Women who practiced pranayama regularly showed a clear improvement in premenstrual symptoms compared to those who did not practice it.
What they did
The researchers studied 100 women aged 10 to 50 in Punjab, India. They divided them into two groups of 50. One group did not practice any breathing or yoga exercises for four to five months. The other group practiced pranayama (a breathing technique from yoga) regularly. They measured how much premenstrual symptoms changed.
What they found
Women who practiced pranayama showed a clear positive effect on their premenstrual syndrome compared to those who did not practice it.
What it means for you
Pranayama breathing practice may help reduce premenstrual symptoms. However, the study was limited to one region of India and did not track whether symptoms improved further with longer practice.
