Does progressive muscle relaxation help PMS symptoms?
Yes. Daily progressive muscle relaxation for 8 weeks significantly improved PMS symptoms compared to routine coping.
What they did
A single-blind randomized controlled trial with 79 single women with PMS in western Turkey. The intervention group did progressive muscle relaxation daily for 8 weeks. The control group continued their usual PMS coping habits. Researchers measured PMS symptoms using a standard scale.
What they found
At the start of the study, both groups had similar PMS symptom scores. After 8 weeks, the intervention group had significantly lower PMS scores than the control group (p less than 0.001). The PMS score in the intervention group decreased significantly.
What it means for you
Progressive muscle relaxation is effective for improving PMS symptoms. The study included only single women in one region of Turkey, so results may not apply to all women with PMS.
