Case-control study, 2024

Does PMS affect leg muscle strength?

Yes. Women with PMS showed significantly decreased leg muscle endurance and higher heart rate and blood pressure during the premenstrual phase compared to the postmenstrual phase.

Moderate study design 51 female pilots or pilot candidates aged 19-23 in Russia

What they did

Case-control study. 51 female pilots or pilot candidates aged 19-23 were tested. 23 had no PMS, 19 had PMS, and 9 took birth control pills. Each woman completed a muscle endurance test during both the premenstrual and postmenstrual phases of her cycle, with heart rate and blood pressure measured before, during, and after.

What they found

During the premenstrual phase, women with PMS decreased their successful test grades significantly and increased heart rate and diastolic blood pressure at peak loading compared to the postmenstrual phase. Women without PMS and those taking birth control pills showed no significant differences between phases.

What it means for you

PMS may affect physical performance and could have practical implications for women pilots during the premenstrual phase. The study is limited to a specific group of young women pilots in Russia and is relatively small, so findings may not apply to all women.
