Can group therapy help adolescent girls with PMS manage emotions and reduce binge eating?

Yes. Adolescent girls who received group supportive psychotherapy showed significant improvement in anger control, mood, anxiety, and positive emotions, and a significant reduction in binge eating compared to girls who did not receive treatment.

Moderate study design 34 high school girls with PMS in Sabzevar, Iran

What they did

Researchers recruited 34 high school girls with PMS and randomly assigned them to either treatment or control. The treatment group attended eight 90-minute sessions of group supportive psychotherapy. Both groups completed questionnaires measuring emotion control and binge eating before and after treatment.

What they found

The treatment group showed significant improvement in anger control, mood, anxiety, and positive affect. They also showed a significant reduction in binge eating compared to the control group after treatment.

What it means for you

Group-based psychological support may help high school girls with PMS manage their emotions and reduce stress-related eating. This therapy addresses how girls regulate their feelings, which helps reduce problematic coping behaviors. The main limitation is the small size (only 34 girls from one school in Iran), so results may not apply everywhere.

Original abstract
