Does exercise help college women with period problems and mental health?
Yes. College women who do moderate to vigorous exercise have less severe period problems, lower stress, fewer depression symptoms, and better sleep quality.
What they did
Cross-sectional study of Chinese female university students. Researchers measured physical activity levels, menstrual health (period pain and premenstrual symptoms), and mental health (stress, anxiety, depression, sleep quality) using surveys. They analyzed the data adjusting for lifestyle and demographic factors.
What they found
Higher moderate-to-vigorous physical activity was significantly correlated with less severe menstrual symptoms and better psychological wellbeing. Active students had lower stress levels, fewer depressive symptoms, and better sleep quality. The benefits appeared to work through reducing perceived stress and improving sleep quality.
What it means for you
Exercise may be an effective way to reduce both period symptoms and mental health problems. The effects may happen by reducing stress and improving sleep. This study cannot prove exercise causes the improvement, only that they are linked.
