Does ubiquinol supplement improve menstrual symptoms?

Possibly, especially in women over 36. In a small open-label pilot study, ubiquinol improved symptom control and mood during premenstrual and menstrual phases, particularly in women 36 and older, and improved sleep quality in that age group.

Early or limited evidence 86 female healthcare workers aged 21-48 years

What they did

Open-label pilot trial of 86 female healthcare workers aged 21-48. The study had an observation period followed by ubiquinol intake (150 mg daily as 75 mg twice daily). Researchers measured menstrual symptoms using the Menstrual Distress Questionnaire before, during, and after each of the first seven menstrual cycles and assessed sleep quality.

What they found

In women under 36 years, ubiquinol significantly improved menstrual control scores (p = 0.049). In women 36 years and older, ubiquinol significantly improved premenstrual negative affect (p = 0.02), premenstrual control scores (p < 0.01), and menstrual control scores (p = 0.03). Sleep quality improved significantly in women 36 and older.

What it means for you

This small pilot study suggests ubiquinol may reduce menstrual symptoms and improve sleep in women over 36. Because it is open-label with no control group, expectations could influence results. The study included only healthcare workers, so findings may not generalize. These preliminary results need confirmation in larger randomized trials.
