Survey study, 2023
Is the short German Premenstrual Assessment Form a reliable tool to measure PMS?
Yes. Both the 20-item and 10-item German versions are reliable and valid tools for measuring PMS symptoms.
What they did
Researchers translated and tested short versions of the Premenstrual Assessment Form (20 items and 10 items) in 147 menstruating people in Germany. They checked how well the tool measured PMS symptoms consistently and compared it to other PMS measures.
What they found
Both versions had high internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha was 0.93 for the 20-item and 0.88 for the 10-item version). Factor analysis found two scales measuring psychological and physiological symptoms. Correlation with the PMS Impact Questionnaire was 0.66 (p<0.001), confirming validity.
What it means for you
These tools work reliably to measure PMS symptoms for research and clinical use. This study is about whether the measurement tool itself is good, not whether any treatment helps symptoms.
