Systematic review, 2014
How common is premenstrual syndrome in women?
About 47.8% of women have PMS, though rates vary widely by country, from 12% in France to 98% in Iran. Prevalence did not increase significantly from 1996 to 2011.
What they did
Systematic review and meta-analysis of prevalence studies. Searched for articles on PMS prevalence and found 53 initially. Reviewed full texts and selected 17 articles for analysis. Combined data using random effects model.
What they found
Overall PMS prevalence was 47.8% (95% confidence interval 32.6 to 62.9). France had lowest prevalence at 12% (95% CI 11 to 13) and Iran had highest at 98% (95% CI 97 to 100). Prevalence trend from 1996 to 2011 was not statistically significant (p=0.797).
What it means for you
PMS is very common but varies widely by country, likely because different studies used different tools and had small sample sizes. Future research should use consistent methods across different countries.
